FILE FORMATS & MEDIA:
File Format: TIFF/IT-P1, CT/LW or raster-based DCS2.
Media: Macintosh-formatted Zip (100mb), Jaz (1GB), CD, or WAM!NET.

All digital submissions should include a printout of the contents of the disk; disk should contain only the necessary files. We normally do not return disks unless you request so in writing; please send us a copy of your file—never send your original documents!

Ads supplied in TIFF/IT-P1 format should include Final Page (FP), Continuous Tone (CT), Linework (LW) and/or Hi-Res Contone (HC) files for each ad. The files should be named with the following extensions:
• Final Page file: filename.FP
• Continuous Tone File: filename.CT
• Line Work File: filename.LW
• Hi-Res Contone file: filename.HC

After the TIFF/IT files are created, do not rename the files.

DIGITAL SPECIFICATIONS
(SWOP specifications apply or The New Yorker will not guarantee reproduction.)
Resolutions: TIFF/IT-P1 format: CT file: 200-400 dpi (SWOP, CMYK); LW and HC files: 2400 dpi
Density: Total density should not exceed 300%
Fonts/Images: All fonts and high resolution images must be included. Use only type 1 fonts. Images must be SWOP (CMYK or grayscale). No JPEG or RGB images or nested EPS files. Ads created in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, Powerpoint, or any other word processing program will NOT be accepted.
Line Screen: 133 lines per inch
Screen Angles: C-75°, M-45°, Y-90°, K-15° (black only ads K-45°)
Trapping: All required trapping should be done prior to creating the file. Black text should be merged with the LW. Color traps = .08mm/0.144 pt and black overprint set when necessary.
Size/Orientation: File should be specified as right reading portrait mode only, 100% size, no rotations.
Color Bars: Include quality control patch (color bars) within maximum dimension of ad file.
Marks: All marks (trim, bleed, center) should be included in all colors, and must be located 1/2" from trim.
Maximum Dimensions: including all additional identifiers (i.e. crop marks, sign-off slugs, color bars, agency/engraver logos) are as follows: single page: 17" high x 11" wide (432mm x 280mm); spread: 12.5" high x 18" wide (318mm x 457mm).
Proofs: Supply at least one (preferably two) digital proof(s) (Kodak Approval, CREO Spectrum or Iris) that matches the supplied digital ad for color guidance on press. Supplied color guidance must meet SWOP specifications, and must include a 6mm 5%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 95%, and 100% CMYK patch strip for quality control. Digital contone, Laser, or Inkjet proofs may be used for content, not color. If you do not provide us with a SWOP-approved digital proof you waive your right to question color reproduction.
Ruled Guidance: All bleed ads and undersized non-bleed ads require a separate ruled position proof showing trim.
Reproduction quality is at the advertiser’s risk if publisher’s specifications are not met or if material is received after closing date, even if on extension.

Live-matter safety = 3/8" from bleed on all sides. Please note that final width of flaps is determined by editorial on an issue-by-issue basis. Please verify size with the production department prior to producing final materials.

GENERAL REPRODUCTION GUIDELINES:
The New Yorker is printed using web offset presses, with both saddle and perfect binding. Trim size is 7-7/8" x 10-3/4", with three columns per page (2-1/4" wide). Body pages are printed on a 36# grade five groundwood stock. Covers and newsstand wrap are printed on a 60# grade three freesheet. For best reproduction, halftone areas with less than an 8% dot should be avoided, and shadows should not exceed 90%. Ads containing darkened detail should be "opened" in scanning to hold maximum detail in the 3/4 tone to darkened range, as subtle differences may not reproduce distinctly on press. Thin lines, serifs, and small type should be restricted to one color, and should not reverse out of less than 25% tone. Color or Reverse type smaller than 10 point cannot be guaranteed perfect registration and is not recommended. When type overprints tone, screen value of tone should not exceed 30% to assure legibility. When using reverse type, the dominant color in the tone should define shape of the type, subordinate colors should be spread to minimize register variation and optimize legibility. Reproduction of cover spreads will vary due to stock differences. Perfect alignment of type or design across gutter cannot be guaranteed.
DEADLINES/MATERIAL HOLD
For ad close deadlines please see attached sheet. All material received after closing date will be inspected if time permits, but may run "as is." If late material is at variance with SWOP specifications, the results may not meet expectations. Materials will be held for six months and then destroyed.
REGIONAL/SPLIT-RUN ADS & INSERTS
Copy splits, regional ads, and inserts will be delivered to their proper areas subject to an allowable variance of 5-10% due to mechanical tolerances and local distribution patterns. Newsstand copies are not split regionally.
