Jim Nelson has been an editor at GQ for the past six years and became editor-in-chief in 2003. He joined the magazine as a senior editor in June 1997; in June of 2002 he became co-Executive Editor. During his tenure at the magazine, he has worked as both a writer and an editor. He edits the work of GQ contributors such as Elizabeth Gilbert, Charles Bowden, Michael Paterniti, and Guy Lawson. Two pieces Nelson edited by Ms. Gilbert and Mr. Paterniti were nominated for awards from the American Society of Magazine Editors in 2003; a special issue Nelson edited on The Male Species was also nominated for an ASME in the Single Topic Issue category. Mr. Nelsons own writing for GQ was cited in The Best American Sports Writing 2001.
Before he came to GQ, from 1994 to 1997, Mr. Nelson was an editor at Harpers, where he was responsible for the magazines Readings section. His writing has also appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Gourmet, and Food & Wine. Prior to his magazine career, Mr. Nelson worked as a writer/producer for CNN, in Washington, D.C., and as a writers assistant on various sitcoms in Hollywood.
Mr. Nelson graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a B.A. in American Studies.
