Klara Glowczewska was appointed Editor in Chief of Condé Nast Traveler in January of 2005. An editor at the magazine since its 1987 inception, she held the position of Executive Editor since 1992.

One of Glowczewska’s signature marks as Editor in Chief is the cornerstone September “Power of Travel” issue, which highlights the people, places, and ideas that shape the world of travel, and depicts how travel impacts everything from art, culture, and fashion to technology, politics, and the environment. She also created the World Savers awards, which honor the travel companies making a difference in poverty alleviation, health, education, wildlife conservation and environmental preservation, and which come to life at the annual Condé Nast Traveler World Savers Congress.

As Executive Editor, Glowczewska commissioned and edited works by some of the day’s leading literary talents, including Robert Hughes, Paul Theroux, John Gregory Dunne, Robert Stone, Russell Banks, Luc Sante, Amy Wilentz, Pico Iyer, Michael Kinsley, Guy Martin, Edna O’Brien, Peter Carey, Andre Aciman, Philip Gourevitch, Stephen King, and E.L. Doctorow.

Several of the articles Glowczewska edited were nominated for National Magazine Awards, including two for best Essays & Criticism—the first time a travel magazine had ever been nominated in that category. Condé Nast Traveler has been nominated for 22 National Magazine Awards, six of which were in the General Excellence category. The magazine has won six awards in numerous categories, including Special Interest, Design, Photography, and General Excellence. Its four most recent nominations came in 2006 and 2007—including one for General Excellence—capping off Glowczewska’s first two years as Editor in Chief.

Before joining Condé Nast, Glowczewska held a number of highly regarded positions in book publishing and journalism, including at Random House and at The New York Review of Books. She has also edited for Condé Nast’ Vanity Fair and The New Yorker.

Born in Warsaw, Poland, and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina; Cairo, Egypt; and New Canaan, Connecticut, Glowczewska is fluent in French and Polish. She has translated three books by the internationally acclaimed Polish writer Ryszard Kapuscinski—Imperium, on Soviet Russia; The Shadow of The Sun, on Africa; and most recently, Travels with Herodotus.

Glowczewska received her B.A. magna cum laude from Yale, where she majored in English. She lives in Manhattan with her husband and two children.
